San Antonio FC Information
On January 7, 2016, San Antonio FC became the 31st USL franchise. San Antonio and Bexar County officials set out to secure an MLS expansion franchise by establishing the club and purchasing Toyota Field simultaneously. The North American Soccer League's San Antonio Scorpions team was disbanded. Orlando City SC Pro Academy Director and former Elon University men's soccer coach Darren Powell was the club's first head coach. On February 2, 2016, the club made Carlos Alvarez its first player signing.
San Antonio FC finished the 2017 USL regular season with a 17-11-4 (W-D-L) record, good for second place in the USL Western Conference and the club's first-ever postseason appearance. Before being eliminated, SAFC made it to the Western Conference semi-finals. In 2018 and 2019, San Antonio finished last place in their conference and missed the playoffs.
After four seasons as head coach, San Antonio FC and Darren Powell mutually decided to part ways on October 30, 2019. He finished his career with a 59-39-44 record in wins, draws, and losses across all competitions. Only in 2017 did he lead the team to the postseason; in his other three years in charge, they did not even come close.
