Sam Houston State Bearkats Football Information
The Bearkats, who reside in Huntsville, Texas, play college football for Sam Houston State University. The university started a football squad in 1912. The Bearkats were originally independent and joined the Texas IAA from 1924 to 1931. The squad joined the NCAA in 1982 after first being members of the NAIA in 1932, which lasted until 1981.
Originally playing Division II of the NCAA, the Sam Houston Bearkats football team moved to the Football Championship Subdivision of Division I in 1986 and has been there ever since. The Bearkats have been league champions in the TIAA, Lone Star League, Gulf Star Conference, and Southland Conference several times. In 2021, the institution signed on to the Southern Athletic Conference.
After joining the FCS in 1986, Sam Houston State regularly participated in playoffs after winning an NAIA national football title in 1960. The Sam Houston football team claimed their first FCS National Championship during the 2020–21 season. The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are rivals for the Bearkats, also known as the Battle of the Piney Woods.
