Sacramento State Hornets Football Information
The Sacramento State Hornets team represents California State University, Sacramento, in the American football competition at the collegiate level. Members of the Big Sky Conference compete at the Division I level of the NCAA's football championship subdivision (FCS). In 1954, the university fielded its first football squad.
Hornet Stadium has a total capacity of 21,195 for home games. When the Hornets football team began in 1954, Dave Strong was hired as its head coach. In 1955, the Hornets were in only their second season when they won their first game, a one-point triumph over Southern Oregon. From 1954 until 1984, Sacramento State was a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference, formerly the Far Western Conference.
From 1985 until 1992, the Hornets competed in the Western Football Conference. Sacramento State left the American West Conference for the Big Sky Conference in 1996 after having played there since 1993. Since 1969, the football squad has played at Hornet Stadium.
