Each year, the best college rugby teams in the country compete in the USA Rugby Sevens Collegiate National Championships to determine the national champion in rugby sevens. After rugby's inclusion in the Summer Olympics was announced in 2009, its popularity skyrocketed, prompting USA Rugby to organize the championship. USA Rugby has noted the rising interest in and participation in rugby sevens. Rugby rapidly became a popular collegiate sport when the tournament was first established.
For the Olympic teams representing the United States of America in rugby, this competition is crucial. The 2012 tournament was better planned, with just UCLA choosing not to play. Increased exposure occurred in 2012 as well, with the entire tournament being webcast live and some of the knockout rounds airing on ESPN3.
Cal, BYU, and UCLA all received invitations to play in the 2013 tournament but opted out. Traditionally held in December, the 2015 competition was moved to May. Less than a week before the 2015 Collegiate Rugby Championship in Philadelphia, the tournament occurred in Denver on May 23 and 24. BYU, California, Life University, and UCLA sat this one out, among other notable teams.
