Richmond Spiders Football Information
The Richmond Spiders are a collegiate football team from Richmond, Virginia, representing the University of Richmond. For the 2008 season, Richmond was the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision champion. Richmond plays in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision's Colonial Athletic Association.
Russ Huesman, the former head coach of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, was named head coach of the Spiders on December 14, 2016, replacing Danny Rocco, who had to leave to become the head coach of the University of Delaware the day before.
No. 7 Richmond advanced to the NCAA Division I Football Championship versus Montana in 2008 after defeating Eastern Kentucky, Appalachian State, and Northern Iowa. On December 19, 2008, they defeated Montana 24–7 in the FCS National Championship Game to capture the University of Richmond's first team NCAA national title in any sport.
The College of William & Mary is Richmond's historic foe in numerous sports. Since 1898, Richmond and William & Mary have met 127 times, making it Division I college football's fourth most-played rivalry (often referred to as "the South's longest rivalry"). The only teams that have played more games are Lafayette–Lehigh, Princeton–Yale, and Harvard–Yale. The Capital Cup (previously the I-64 Trophy) is awarded to the victor of the annual W&M–Richmond match, which honors the historical significance of Williamsburg and Richmond as the Commonwealth of Virginia's last two capitals.
