Red River Showdown Information
College football rivals Oklahoma and Texas play each other annually in a game known as the Oklahoma-Texas rivalry. In 1900, the first game of a rivalry that would end in 2022 after 118 contests between the two teams was played. The Red River Shootout, Red River Rivalry, and Red River Showdown are all names used to describe this intense rivalry. Named for the body of water that forms much of the boundary between Texas and Oklahoma, "Red River" has come to represent the area.
At least one team has been ranked entering the game 70 times since 1936, the inaugural year of the AP Poll, including the previous 19 meetings in a row before both teams entered the game unranked and with identical 3-2 records in 2022. Texas has a 63-50-5 series advantage (.555).
Both teams brought different colors to the field in their most recent matchups on October 9, 2021, and October 8, 2022. The 2021 rematch was the highest-scoring game in the rivalry, with the sixth-ranked Sooners returning from a 21-point first-quarter hole to beat the 21st-ranked Longhorns 55-48. In 2022, Texas outscored the Sooners 49-0 in a humiliating victory, scoring all their points in the first half.
