Canada hosts the annual Canadian Open, a major tournament for professional golfers. Before establishing the professional tour system, this national open held particular significance for American players since it was the most easily accessible national open outside the United States. There was a time during the interwar years when it was ranked third among the sport's most esteemed tournaments, following The Open Championship and the U.S. Open.
The event continued to take place in early September throughout the early 2000s. The RCGA advocated for a different date, hoping to return to a more favorable summer slot. After the 2007 FedEx Cup, the PGA Tour moved the Canadian Open to late July, where it would be wedged between three even more prominent events. 2019, the Canadian Open was shifted to early June before the U.S. Open due to a PGA Tour and major scheduling realignment.
As of November 2018, the Town of Oakville and ClubLink's disagreement is still pending in court. Hamilton Golf & Country Club will host the Open Championship in 2019. If Clublink's proposed makeover is halted, the event might return to Glen Abbey in a subsequent year. This last year's Open was hosted by Oakdale Golf & Country Club.
