Rate Bowl Information
A collegiate football game known as the Guaranteed Rate Bowl has occurred in Arizona every year since 1989. Initially known as the Copper Bowl, it went by several names throughout the years. From 1997 to 2001, it was the Insight.com Bowl; from 2002 to 2011, it was the Insight Bowl again; from 2012 to 2013, it was the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl; and from 2014 to 2017, it was the Cactus Bowl. The Cheez-It Bowl was the name of the game in 2018 and 2019.
In 2020, the game was rechristened the Guaranteed Rate Bowl after signing on as the game's title sponsor. For the first decade, the event took place at Arizona Stadium, which is located on the Tucson campus of the University of Arizona. Bank One Ballpark, a downtown Phoenix baseball stadium, was chosen by the bowl's organizers to host the game in 2000. Sun Devil Stadium at Arizona State University in Tempe was the new home of the Fiesta Bowl in 2006 after it had relocated from the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, a Phoenix suburb, to there.
Only UCF, Cincinnati, Houston, and Texas have yet to participate in this bowl as of 2023. All other Big 12 schools have. Seven current Big 12 schools have made more than one appearance. While Colorado and Missouri are bowl-experienced former Big 12 teams, neither Nebraska nor Texas A&M have made it to the big dance.
