Quad City Storm Information
A professional minor league hockey club called the Quad City Storm joined the SPHL for the 2018–19 season. The team's home arena is Moline, Illinois's Vibrant Arena at The MARK, and they are based in the Quad Cities region of Iowa and Illinois. When the Quad City Mallards of the Eastern Conference suspended operations in 2018, this club took their place. The pandemic's aftereffects forced the Storm and other SPHL clubs to skip the 2020–21 season.
Jordan Melville, who became the only owner of the Quad City Mallards in 2013, said in 2018 that he was folding the team due to a loss of approximately $4 million. Locals John Dawson and Ryan Mosley bought the franchise rights from the disbanded Louisiana IceGators on May 24, 2018, to play in the Southern Professional Hockey League instead of the Mallards at the TaxSlayer Center in 2018–19.
Howard Cornfield, who had previously owned the Mallards, was hired as a consultant. As their first head coach, the club brought in Dave Pszenyczny, a veteran of the SPHL. After holding a name-the-team contest, the new team, the Quad City Storm, was revealed on June 21. The Mallard name was unavailable because the ECHL retained the trademark.
