Boxing in the professional ranks, often known as prizefighting, is a form of sport that is strictly controlled by the authorities. The winners of professional boxing contests split the pay according to the terms of their contracts. To ensure the safety of the fighters, a regulatory body is present at the vast majority of professional bouts. In most cases, the fights that get the most attention are the ones that get sanctioned by an organization that hands out championship belts, makes the regulations, and selects the judges and referees.
Professional boxing matches are far longer than amateur ones, lasting between eight and twelve rounds. However, smaller fights may only go four rounds. Boxers cannot wear protective headgear and may sustain damage before the fight is stopped. Professional boxing has enjoyed a significantly higher profile than amateur boxing.
Cuba outlawed professional boxing in 1961 and did not lift the ban until April 2022, as was the case in Norway from 1981-2014 and Sweden from 1970-2007. After the Queensberry Rules were established in 1891, the National Sporting Club (N.S.C.), a private club in London, began hosting professional glove bouts under its own rules and regulations.
The regulations improved clarity regarding the officials' responsibilities and led to the development of a scoring system that allowed the referee to declare the victor of a fight. The National Boxing Council (N.S.C.) was instrumental in founding the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) in 1919; the N.S.C. was disbanded in 1929.
