The Ivy League Princeton University football team is the Princeton Tigers. They compete in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The football programs at Princeton and adjacent Rutgers University both got their starts in 1869 with a game frequently referred to as the birth of American football.
On November 6, 1869, students from The College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) came to New Brunswick, New Jersey, for a match utilizing modified London Football Association regulations against Rutgers College (now Rutgers University). Each side of the game had its inlayers, and the only way to move the round ball was to kick it. Rutgers, 6-4, won the first intercollegiate American football game.
An NCAA-designated major selector has awarded 28 national titles to Princeton. They maintain claims to championships won at the highest level then, with retroactive championships for the 19th century, in which Princeton was crowned champion for 20 different seasons in 30 years from 1869 to 1899, even though they do not participate in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.
