Prefontaine Classic Information
The Prefontaine Classic is a popular Oregon Track Club event. It is one of the premier track and field events in Eugene, Oregon. Yearly, the event draws a world-caliber field set to compete at Hayward Field, located on the University of Oregon campus. Prefontaine Classic was previously one of the IAAF Grand Prix events. At the moment, it is a prominent part of the Diamond League. This is considered one of the few international competitions that successfully host the imperial distances of the 2 Mile run and Mile run.
The very first Prefontaine Classic meet event took place in 1975. The Hayward Restoration Meets of 1973–74 share genesis with the meet. To renovate the deteriorated wooden West Grandstands at Hayward Field, the Hayward Restoration meets were developed. In 1975, the meet was decided to turn into the "Bowerman Classic." This was to honor the longtime track coach Bill Bowerman of the University of Oregon. The event was scheduled to take place on June 7, 1975.
On May 30, the Olympian and distance runner of the University of Oregon, Steve Prefontaine, ran into an unexpected death in an automobile accident. Due to this incident, on June 1, the Oregon Track Club's name was changed with Bowerman's approval. Six days later, the first "Pre Classic" took place.
Since 1978, Nike has been the primary sponsor of the meet. The 2019 edition of the meet shifted to Angell Field and Stanford's Cobb Track, Palo Alto, California. This happened due to the restoration of Hayward Field in anticipation of the IAAF World Athletics Championships that were planned to take place in 2021.
