Preakness Stakes Information
Every year, on the third Saturday in May, Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, hosts the Preakness Stakes, a race for American thoroughbred horses. Run on dirt for a distance of 1+3/16 miles (9.5 furlongs; 1.9 km), the Preakness Stakes is a Grade I event. There are 126 pounds (57 kg) for colts and geldings and 121 pounds (55 kg) for fillies. Two weeks following the Kentucky Derby and three weeks preceding the Belmont Stakes, this race serves as the second jewel, or leg, of the Triple Crown.
In North America, the Preakness Stakes attracts more spectators than any other stakes race, including the Belmont Stakes, the Breeders' Cup, and the Kentucky Oaks. At present, the Preakness takes place on the third Saturday of May, after the Kentucky Derby by two weeks and the Belmont Stakes by three weeks. As a result, the event must occur between May 15 and May 21.
