Prairie View A&M Panthers Football Information
The Prairie View A&M University Panthers football team competes in collegiate football on behalf of Prairie View A&M University. Henry B. Hucles started in 1924 as Prairie View's first football coach. Prairie View had a 7-0 win against a team from Wylie, Texas, in 1907 and a 7-6 loss to Tuskegee University in 1920 before Hucles arrived.
Billy Nicks was by far Prairie View's most famous and lauded trainer. Nicks, who was an assistant coach from 1948 to 1951 and then the head coach from 1952 to 1965, is sometimes called the "Bear Bryant" of black collegiate football. After 17 seasons, his record stood at 127-39-8. Eight Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and five black college national titles were won under his tutelage for the Panthers. Eddie Robinson was rumored to hate playing Prairie View when the Panthers were at their best under Nicks.
A member of the College Football Hall of Fame since 1999, Nicks is a legend in the sport. The American Football Coaches Association has awarded Nicks with its Trailblazer Award. The award was given posthumously on the first day of the 2008 AFCA Convention in Anaheim, California, during the AFCA Kickoff Luncheon on Monday, January 7. Prairie View University is the first HBCU to host and participate in a postseason bowl game. From 1929 to 1961, Texas hosted the Prairie View Bowl.
