The University of Pittsburgh (or "Pitt") men's basketball team competes in NCAA Division I as a collegiate school based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Petersen Events Center is the Pitt men's basketball team's home court, which participates in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). 

Three organizations—the Premo-Porretta Power Poll, the Helms Athletic Foundation, and the NCAA tournament—recognized the Panthers as national champions before the event. From their first season in 1905–06 to 2022–23, Pitt has 1,674 wins and 1,232 defeats, one Final Four appearance, fifteen First Team All-American selections, and participation in twenty-seven NCAA tournaments. 

The Helms Athletic Foundation and the general public acknowledged the 1927–28 and 1929–30 Pitt men's basketball teams as national champions. During the 1927–28 season, these "Doc" Carlson teams, coached by Charley Hyatt—a three-time All-American and two-time National Scoring Champion—participated in a "national" schedule. Pitt renewed Dixon's contract for another two years on March 31, 2010, extending his tenure as head coach of the Pitt Panthers until the 2017–18 season. On March 23, 2013, Dixon extended his contract once more. The 2022–2023 season was the duration of this prolongation.
