PIAA State Basketball Championship Information
When it comes to high school basketball in Pittsburg, the Pittsburg Interscholastic Athletic Association governs the state championship. The Pittsburg Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) was founded in 1913 and is responsible for coordinating athletic competitions between schools in the city's elementary, middle, junior, and senior high school levels. For basketball, the postseason did not begin until 1920. In 1973, the first women's basketball league was formed.
The PIAA uses six distinct categories to categorize institutions according to student enrollment. The 2020-2021 season will be the first time schools with 91 or fewer male students compete in 1A. Classes 2A are for males numbered 91–140 and 3A, 141–209. Class 4A institutions often enroll between 210 and 304 male students, Class 5A institutions typically enroll between 305 and 504, while Class 6A institutions typically enroll more than 504 male students.
East and West Regions are used for most PIAA sports. There are 12 districts in all, with districts 1 through 4 in the East District and districts 11 and 12 in the West District. The finals for boys' and girls' 1A-6A state championships are played at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
