PFL - Professional Fighters League Information
The Professional Fighters League is an American mixed martial arts league created in 2018 after MMAX Investment Partners purchased and restructured the defunct World Series of Fighting (WSOF) promotion in 2017. Individual athletes compete in a regular season, post-season, and championship, making it the first major MMA organization to do so.
The PFL currently has six weight divisions: featherweight, women's lightweight, lightweight, welterweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight, and super heavyweight. The PFL contests take place within the SmartCage, a 10-sided mixed-martial-arts cage that follows the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts except for the prohibition of elbow blows.
The PFL's first event took place on June 7, 2018, at Madison Square Garden's Hulu Theatre in New York City, New York. In the end, each of the six weight classes champions received a $1 million championship reward.
Former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch and artist Wiz Khalifa invested in the PFL in April 2021. Lynch is a member of the ownership group, whereas Khalifa is a consultant. DraftKings was named the PFL's first official sportsbook and daily fantasy partner the same month. DraftKings would sponsor the league's pre-fight shows and gather real-time data for future prop bets using their in-fighting technology.
