Pennsylvania State University hosts the Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling program, a varsity intercollegiate sport. Wrestling is a sport that college athletes participate in, and the team is a part of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.
The Nittany Lions play their home games at Rec Hall on Penn State's campus in State College, Pennsylvania. There have been 55 individual Nittany Lions national championships and 12 team championships.
The first intra-class duals, which introduced new students to college life, were held in 1902 and inspired wrestling at Penn State in the early 20th century. In 1908, a wrestling club was established after the 1904 establishment of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association to compete on behalf of Penn State.
Penn State wrestling hired Cael Sanderson, a legendary American wrestler, as head coach in April 2009. Sanderson was undefeated in 159 career collegiate wrestling matches and won four national championships. In 2004, After winning the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Athens, he became a coach at Iowa State, his alma school.
The squad is once again among the best in the nation for collegiate wrestling, thanks to Sanderson. They won the title for four consecutive years (2011–2014 and 2016–2019) and are now among the best in the nation. The squad went on a 60-match winning streak that began on February 22, 2015, and ended on November 22, 2019.
