The Pegasus World Cup is an American Thoroughbred horse race that debuted on January 28, 2017, at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Horses must be at least four years old to participate in the race, which is held on a dirt course measuring 1+1/8 miles (9 furlongs). The Donn Handicap was used to determine the Grade I grade.
The Pegasus World Cup, with a first-run reward of $12 million, was the wealthiest horse race in the world in 2017 and 2018, surpassing the Dubai World Cup. After reaching $16 million in 2018, the event's purse fell to $9 million this year. In 2020, the Pegasus World Cup was held for the fourth time and had a prize of $3 million. There has been a progression in the admission price structure, going from $1 million in 2017 and 2018 to $500,000 in 2019 and finally to free in 2020.
With a three-pound allowance for mares and fillies, the maximum weight for a horse is 124 pounds (56 kg). A five-pound allowance was given to horses that did not take furosemide (also known as Lasix) before races from 2017 to 2019. The Stronach Group celebrated a "new era" in North American thoroughbred racing in 2020 when they announced a ban on all drugs used on race day, including Lasix. A 110-foot Greek mythological horse Pegasus sculpture may be found at Gulfstream Park, where the race is named after him.
