Oscar De La Hoya Information
Oscar De La Hoya (February 4, 1973) is an American former boxing professional and promoter. His parents moved from Mexico to the United States before his birth. He was born into a boxing family in East Los Angeles, California; his grandfather, Vicente, was an amateur boxer in the 1940s. His father, Joel Sr., was a professional boxer in the 1960s. Joel Jr., his younger brother, was also a boxer. In 1991, De La Hoya graduated from East Los Angeles' Garfield High School.
After losing a competition in Whittier to Leon Hernandez of Santa Monica, De La Hoya won the national Junior Olympics 119-pound title at 15. The following year, he won the 125-pound title. He had 234 wins, 163 of which were knockouts, and only six losses during his amateur career. Shane Mosley was the victim of two of those six defeats.
Oscar De La Hoya (96–1–1) faced Julio César Chávez (96–1–1) for the lineal and WBC light welterweight titles on June 7, 1996. With a 21–0 record and 19 knockouts, De la Hoya overcame Chavez in the fourth round via TKO. De La Hoya fought Pernell Whitaker (40–1–1) in the welterweight division in 1997. The battle turned out to be a difficult one. Whitaker's defense irritated De La Hoya, and Whitaker made more shots overall than De La Hoya.
