NWSL Championship Information
At the top of the American League structure is the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), a professional women's soccer league. It is owned by the teams and managed by the United States Soccer Federation until 2020.
The Women's Professional Soccer (WPS; 2007–2012) was replaced by the NWSL in 2012, which replaced the Women's United Soccer Association (2001–2003). Four of the eight teams in the league's inaugural season (2013) were former WPS members (Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, Sky Blue FC, and Western New York Flash). It features 12 teams spread across the country as of 2022.
Five teams had won the NWSL Shield, given to the team that finished first at the end of the regular season, as of May 7, 2022; four teams had won the NWSL Shield, and three teams had won the NWSL Challenge Cup, an annual league cup competition that started in 2020. The Washington Spirit are the 2019–2021 NWSL Champions. The Portland Thorns are the current (2021) shield winners. The North Carolina Courage is the Challenge Cup winner in 2022.
