NHRA Nationals Information
NHRA Nationals, also known as the Denso Spark Plugs U.S. Nationals is the famous NHRA-sanctioned drag racing event that first took place in 1955. The event is commonly named The Big Go. Due to its history, size, and purse, the event is considered the most prestigious drag racing event worldwide. NHRA Nationals is held on an annual basis at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, located in Brownsburg, Indiana.
NHRA Nationals is traditionally a Labor Day weekend event. Its eliminations take place on Monday but recently shifted to Sunday due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. It is one of the longest-running Labor Day motorsports events in the nation. This distinction was earned by the event in 2004. The first edition of the drag race took place at the Great Bend Municipal Airport in 1955 (Great Bend, Kansas). The event was first moved to Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in 1958 and later to Detroit Dragway in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959. Finally, the race moved to Indianapolis Raceway Park in 1961. It was formerly known as O'Reilly Raceway Park in 2006. Lucas Oil purchased the naming rights in 2011 and renamed it to Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
