NHRA Arizona Nationals Information
In the 1950s, the National Hot Rod Association began holding drag racing competitions. The first NHRA U.S. Nationals took place in 1955; since then, the event has been a staple at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Raceway. Arizona is one of the states that have hosted national contests since then. For most of the years, Chandler, Arizona's Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park hosts the NHRA Arizona Nationals.
The winter months see the most visitors to the multi-use arena, a favorite of the NHRA and IndyCar teams for testing. The quarter-mile drag strip is common at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park and many other courses. The National Hot Rod Association has sponsored multiple tournaments, not only the one in Arizona that is considered the national racing event.
The Summer Nationals and Winter Nationals are two events they support yearly. Past event winners include well-known racers, such as Top Fuel champ Steve Torrence, Funny Car champion Tommy Johnson Jr., and Pro Stock champion Erica Enders.
