NHL Winter Classic Information
The NHL Winter Classic is an outdoor ice hockey game that takes place during the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season. The event happens every year on or near New Year's Day. When an NHL franchise calls a city home, the NHL playoffs are often played there at a football or baseball stadium.
The Winter Classic was the NHL's first regular-season outdoor game, and it followed the 2001 success of the Cold War at Michigan State University and the 2003 success of the Heritage Classic. The NHL attendance record of 105,491 was achieved in 2014 at a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings.
Only the US has hosted the Winter Classic, whereas Canada has hosted every Heritage Classic. Before the Maple Leafs appeared in 2014, all teams participating in the Winter Classic were from the United States.
The 2023 NHL Winter Classic was held at Fenway Park. Consequently, Fenway Park joined the ranks of the few outdoor venues that have hosted not one but two Winter Classics. The Penguins were named the opponent on April 13, 2022, and the game was scheduled for January 2.
Gary Bettman, commissioner of the National Hockey League, announced the pregame show of the 2023 Winter Classic that the Seattle Kraken will host the 2024 Winter Classic at T-Mobile Park, facing off against the Vegas Golden Knights. The first-ever Winter Classic between teams from the Pacific Division will take place on the West Coast of the US this year.
