NHL Heritage Classic Information
The National Hockey League (NHL) plays outdoor games in Canadian Football stadiums, known as the NHL Heritage Classic (French: La Classique Héritage de la LNH). The NHL's other two outdoor series, the NHL Winter Classic and the NHL Stadium Series have been held more often than the Heritage Classic. There have only been seven games in the series so far, and all five have been between Canadian teams.
As the first outdoor regular season game in NHL history, the 2003 Heritage Classic staged by the Edmonton Oilers at Commonwealth Stadium paved the way for similar games in other countries. The 2011 Heritage Classic, played in Calgary's McMahon Stadium, broke records for sponsorship and revenue.
Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario, hosted the sixth annual Heritage Classic in 2022. Since no other Canadian team had previously participated in a Heritage Classic, the Buffalo Sabres were the first U.S. team to play in a Heritage Classic, and the Toronto Maple Leafs were the first to play in a Heritage Classic.
The Oilers hosted the Calgary Flames in the inaugural outdoor hockey Battle of Alberta, the eighth Heritage Classic.
Commonwealth Stadium played home to the NHL's Heritage Classic in 2023 when the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers met in the Battle of Alberta. The league made this announcement on January 1, 2023.
