Nebraska Cornhuskers Wrestling Information
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are the school's football team, playing at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Lincoln, Nebraska. As members of the Big Ten Conference, an esteemed NCAA Division I league, the Cornhuskers will face off against some of the best wrestling programs in the country, including those from Ohio State and Michigan.
From its inaugural 1911 season under coach R.G. Clapp onward, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln wrestling team has a long and storied history. Even though the NCAA didn't exist yet, the Cornhuskers enjoyed much early success under Clapp. They won the WIAA title three times in his 16 years as head coach, a period that still evokes a sense of nostalgia among Nebraska sports enthusiasts.
Sadly, the program's popularity would be short-lived; once Clapp left, it would go through a long period of mediocrity and eventually fade into oblivion for decades. Nebraska Wrestling tickets were in high demand among Nebraska sports fans again when Bob Fehrs was hired in 1978, which led to a full turnaround for the Cornhuskers.
Between 1978 and 1985, the Cornhuskers had their greatest run under any coach thus far, with a total record of 95-51-2. Part of this historic run occurred between 1981 and 1984 when the squad finished sixth, sixth, and fourth at the NCAA Championships. With many top-five performances and more than 20 top-ten team results at nationals, Nebraska has swiftly become one of the most prestigious wrestling programs in the nation since then.
