The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) holds the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship, also called the Women's Collegiate Cup, to crown the national champion of the women's division of American collegiate soccer.
In 1982, the NCAA introduced a women's soccer championship tournament with 12 teams competing in a single division. In 1986, with the creation of Division III for non-scholarship institutions, the tournament changed its name to the Division I Championship. There are now 64 teams in the competition.
In women's soccer, the competition is called the Women's College Cup, which consists of the semifinals and final played at the same location annually.
Division I women's soccer has a long history of dominance at North Carolina. The Tar Heels have won 22 of the 31 national championships awarded by the NCAA, solidifying their reputation as one of the most successful collegiate programs in NCAA history. Additionally 1981, they were victorious in the AIAW national soccer tournament.
There have been 30 appearances by the Tar Heels in the College Cup. After guiding the Tar Heels from the program's start in 1979, head coach Anson Dorrance is widely regarded as one of the best women's soccer coaches in NCAA history.
