Navy Midshipmen Football Information
The US Naval Academy is represented in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision collegiate football by the Navy Midshipmen football team. In 2014, the Naval Academy competed in its final season as an FBS independent institution (one that is not a part of a conference). Beginning with the 2015 season, the Naval Academy began competing as a single-sport member of the American Athletic Conference.
After playing as an FBS independent institution (not in a league) for the 2014 season, the Naval Academy joined the American Athletic League as a one-sport member for the 2015 season.
Brian Newberry, formerly the Midshipmen's defensive coordinator, was promoted to head coach in 2022. In 1926, the Navy won the college football national title according to the Boand and Houlgate polls, and they have 19 players and three coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame. The 1910 team similarly went unbroken and allowed no goals.
In 2015, under Niumatalolo's leadership, the Navy became a member of the American Athletic Conference after being independent for 134 years. At Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in 2016, the Midshipmen defeated sixth-ranked Houston 46-40, marking their first victory over a top-10 team since 1984, when they beat South Carolina.
For the first time since the early 1960s, the Navy won back-to-back games over Notre Dame (their traditional adversary) in 2009 and 2010. In 2016, the Midshipmen also won against Notre Dame and finished with a 9-5 record.
