National League Championship Series Information
The National League Championship Series (NLCS) is a playoff, best-of-seven, with one of the two League Championship Series. It comprises the penultimate round of Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason. The NLCS’s winner then wins the NL pennant and continues to the World Series to play with the American League’s Championship Series winner. The NLCS started in 1969, following the best-of-five playoff, which was used until 1985.
Champion of the National League was determined through the best win-loss record at the end of every regular season before 1969. The structured postseason season started taking place in the year 1969. Since the expansion has been made to seven games, the ALCS and NLCS are played in a 2-3-2 format. Games 3, 4, and 5 are played in the team’s stadium that does not have a home-field advantage.
The National League Championship Series trophy was named “Warren C. Giles Trophy” for the NL president from 1951 to 1969. It has also been awarded to the NLCS winner. Teams that have won the National League recently include Los Angeles Dodgers (2020), Washington Nationals (2019), Chicago Cubs (2016), and New York Mets (2015).
