Motor City Cruise Information
Motor City Cruise is the Pistons' minor league team in the NBA G League. They play in Detroit. Originally founded in 2003 as the Long Beach Jam in the resurrected American Basketball Association, the team relocated to Bakersfield, California, in the D-League in 2006. The Phoenix Suns relocated its minor league affiliate from Bakersfield, California, to Prescott Valley, Arizona, in 2016, changing the team's name to the Northern Arizona Suns. After being purchased by the Detroit Pistons in 2021, the club moved there the following year.
The Long Beach Jam was one of the teams sanctioned by the American Basketball Association to play during its 2002–03 season suspension. NBA legend Dennis Rodman, seasoned veteran Corey Gaines, promising youngster Matt Barnes, and Japanese point guard Yuta Tabuse joined the Jam in their inaugural season. They also hired Paul Westhead, a former NBA Finals-winning head coach; however, after their first game, Westhead left to become an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic.
The Phoenix Suns sold the Northern Arizona Suns to the Detroit Pistons on July 29, 2020, and the Pistons announced on August 1, 2020, that they had purchased the team and would relocate it to Detroit for the 2021–22 season, where it would play at Wayne State Fieldhouse.
