Montanas Brier Information
The Brier, which is French for "Le Brier," is the yearly Canadian men's curling tournament. For sponsorship reasons, it is also known as Montana's Brier. The Canadian restaurant business Montana is the current event's principal sponsor, thus the name. When the Macdonald Tobacco Company was the event's initial sponsor, the name "Brier" was used to describe a particular tobacco brand.
Since its inception in 1927, the Brier has taken place every March. The Canadian curling team sends its champion to the World Curling Championships in the same year the Brier is held. Compared to other curling competitions, the Brier has the most enthusiastic fan base and draws more spectators than the World Championships in Canada.
There are eighteen teams competing in the Brier at the moment. One team represents the majority of provinces and territories; however, Ontario sends not one but two teams, namely Ontario and Northern Ontario. Joining the ten provinces, three territories, Team Canada, and the top-ranked non-qualified team on the Canadian Team Ranking System rankings, the event's field was enlarged to sixteen teams beginning with the 2018 Brier.
The teams are divided into two groups of eight and play a round-robin format. The teams who finish first and second in each pool move on to the next round, where the top four teams meet again. With all things considered, the CTRS standings, as of December 31, 2017, were supposed to decide the pools.
