Montana State Bobcats Football Information
Football at Montana State University is represented by the Bobcats, who play in the Big Sky Conference of the NCAA's Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Since beginning in 1897, the program has been successful, winning the title in 1956, 1976, and 1984. It is the only college football team in the US to have won the national title in the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) levels of play. The Bobcats will have participated in 1,049 games by the 2022 season, finishing with a 525-492-32 record.
Before joining the NAIA in 1952, Montana State competed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, where they won their first title. The RMAC and the NAIA have had a football champion before this season.
From 1957 through 1962, MSC enjoyed one of its most successful stretches as an independent, with six consecutive winning seasons. Montana State has won two NCAA titles since joining the Big Sky Conference as a founding member.
About 22 conference championships have been won by Montana State. This includes 17 Big Sky Conference championships and five Rocky Mountain Athletic championships.
In eight of the previous nine decades, the Bobcats have been crowned conference champions; in seven of those, they have won multiple titles. Thirteen times they have made it to the postseason of the NCAA, once as a Division II member (1976) and eleven times as a Division I-AA/FCS member (1984, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2010-2012, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022).
