In a review of UFC 1 by reviewer Howard Rosenberg in 1993, the phrase "mixed martial arts" was used for the first time.
Combat sport started in Ancient China in the form of Leitai. Also, in Ancient Greek, there was a sport called pankration. It incorporated striking and grappling techniques similar to those seen in modern mixed martial arts. Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do system popularised the concept of mixing components of numerous martial arts throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s.
In 1976, at Memphis Blues Baseball Park, Golden Gloves boxing champion Joey Hadley faced Arkansas Karate Champion David Valovich in a well-documented fight. Muhammad Ali fought Antonio Inoki in Japan in 1976. The classic match-up between a professional boxer and a professional wrestler went sour as each combatant refused to engage in the other's style. The fight was declared a draw after a 15-round standstill.
