The Mississippi State Bulldogs are a men's NCAA Division I basketball program that plays on behalf of Starkville, Mississippi's Mississippi State University. They compete in the Southeastern Conference. Mississippi State has made it to the NCAA tournament twelve times, most recently in 2023. Making it to the Final Four in 1996 was the Bulldogs' best NCAA tournament performance. Chris Jans, the 21st head basketball coach for Mississippi State, was appointed on March 20, 2022. Jans had previously coached at New Mexico State.

Ole Miss is, of course, Mississippi State's adversary in sports. With a series lead of 142-112, Mississippi State is ahead of Ole Miss. Rick Stansbury, a former head coach of Michigan State, has a 21-8 record against the Rebels.  Ben Howland, the head coach before, has a 6-9 record versus the Rebels. Despite being just 90 miles apart, the Mississippi State and Alabama basketball programs are fierce rivals. Overall, the Crimson Tide have a better record (120–74).

Twelve times have the Bulldogs been a part of the NCAA tournament. Together, they have a record of 11-12. Despite the Bulldogs' qualification for the 1959 tournament, they were not allowed to compete due to the presence of African-American players. This discriminatory act did not deter the Bulldogs. Instead, it strengthened their commitment to diversity and equality. Bailey Howell's jersey number was retired by Mississippi State on February 7, 2009, at the Coliseum, a proud moment for the Bulldogs and a testament to their values.
