Minnesota Golden Gophers Womens Volleyball Information
The Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team represents the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in NCAA Division I women's volleyball. Under the direction of head coach Dee Jilek, the program began its debut season in 1972. Hugh McCutcheon, the team's current head coach, took over after the 2012 Olympics. Except for 1998, when he was the team's head coach, the previous coach Mike Hebert has led the Golden Gophers to each NCAA Tournament appearance. Back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances from 2003 and 2004 were highlights of his tenure.
After a tough 2014 season in which the Golden Gophers missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998, Minnesota entered the season unranked in the AVCA preseason poll, projected to finish fifth in the Big Ten. Minnesota surpassed all expectations under Big Ten Coach of the Year and AVCA Coach of the Year Hugh McCutcheon. It was led by the play of four AVCA All-Americans on its way to an 18–2 Big Ten conference record, the best in program history, and its second-ever Big Ten conference championship, the first since 2002.
The Golden Gophers had a 26–4 record before the NCAA Tournament, earning them the top seed in their bracket and the No. 2 overall seed. After only dropping one set in regional competition. Minnesota advanced to the Final Four in Omaha, Nebraska, where the Texas Longhorns defeated them in the National Semifinals.
