The football team began competing in the Sun Belt Conference in the 2022 season after the institution formally joined the conference in June 2022. Huff coached Marshall to a 26-21 victory over the No. 8-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Notre Dame Stadium on September 10, 2022.
Huff defeated the UConn Huskies 28-14 in the 2022 Myrtle Beach Bowl, his first bowl victory as a head coach. Until the 2022 season, Marshall has been invited to play in 19 bowl games and has a 13–6 record. Before 1968, the NCAA did not officially recognize the Tangerine Bowl. Since 1948, Marshall has not been officially recognized as having participated in a bowl game by the NCAA.
