Known simply as "The Tournament," the MAAC Men's Basketball Championship is the annual basketball tournament that determines the MAAC champion (MAAC). Since the inaugural season of the MAAC in 1982, the event has been conducted annually. It is a competition with only one round of play, and the teams are seeded according to their regular season performance. The victor of the conference tournament is awarded the automatic bid from that league to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.

Before 1984, the MAAC had to wait for an automatic bid from the NCAA. Although the tournament has employed several formats over the years, conference records have always been used to determine seeding (with tiebreakers used as needed). Six schools from the conference (Army, Fairfield, Fordham, Iona, Manhattan, and Saint Peter's) participated in the inaugural tournament in 1982. The top two seeds advanced directly to the semifinals with a first-round bye, and the remaining four teams had to travel to the arena of the team with the highest seed to play in the opening round.

Before 1990, the Meadowlands Arena was the site of the semifinals and finals, but they were transferred to the Knickerbocker Arena. In 1982, 1983, 1984, 1988, and 1989, the tournaments in the conference all followed this format. When the 1989 tournament was over, the league decided to host all the games at predetermined locations. A consolation game for the semifinalists' losers was added in 1982, 1984, and 1985.
