Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov (September 20, 1988) is a Russian former professionally mixed martial artist. He was born in Sildi, Dagestan ASSR, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. Nurmagomedov, a Russian from the Republic of Dagestan, is the first Muslim to win a title in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As of the end of 2022, he has more than 34 million followers on Instagram, making him the most popular Russian on that platform. He is also well-known for promoting MMA events like the Eagle Fighting Championship (EFC). He is now a coach and cornerman for MMA fighters after retiring from the sport.
Beginning his professional MMA career in September 2008, Nurmagomedov won his first four bouts over one month. On October 11, after facing off against three opponents in Moscow, he emerged victorious and claimed the title of champion of the inaugural Atrium Cup tournament. In the three years that followed, he had a perfect record, knocking out eleven of his opponents. In his M-1 Global debut, he submitted future Bellator title challenger Shahbulat Shamhalaev with an armbar in the first round. He had seven fights in 2011 for the ProFC organization, winning them all by technical knockout or submission.
The UFC confirmed on Friday, August 3, 2018, that Nurmagomedov would defend his lightweight title against Conor McGregor at UFC 229 on October 6 in Las Vegas. After dominating the first two rounds, Nurmagomedov eventually succumbed to McGregor in the deciding third. Until this fight, Nurmagomedov had never dropped a round in the UFC. In the fourth round, he submitted McGregor and won the fight.
