The Owls play football for Kennesaw State University in the Big South Conference and compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. In the Georgia town of Kennesaw sits Kennesaw State University. Located near campus, Fifth Third Bank Stadium can hold 8,318 spectators and host home games. The stadium opened to the public in 2010 and was designed for soccer.
In 2009, student government officials at Kennesaw State sent out a poll to all students inquiring about the possibility of establishing a football team. The tally came back with 77.6% of the people voting in favor. William S. Papp, president of KSU, appointed legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley to lead an exploratory committee. In 2013, KSU's proposals were approved by the Board of Regents after being presented to them.
The Owls began the 2018 season with their best-ever start in either poll, at number five. The setback against neighboring Georgia State in Kennesaw's season opener was the third straight for the Bulldogs. Kennesaw finished the 2019 season with an 11-3 record, bringing its overall record to 48-15. As a result, the Owls were the most successful inaugural football program over its first five seasons.
