Kansas Jayhawks Football Information
The University of Kansas's football team, known as the Kansas Jayhawks, competes in NCAA Division I. The Big 12 Conference is the league in which this program participates and holds the NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision (FBS) designation. Lance Leipold is currently in charge of the Jayhawks' coaching staff.
The team is the oldest in Kansas and one of the oldest in the country, having played its first game in 1890. David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, the team's home field, was built in 1921, making it one of the nation's oldest collegiate football venues. Memorial Stadium was one of the few Division I football stadiums with a track around the field until 2014. In 2019, a new indoor practice facility for the University of Kansas football team was built just west of the stadium.
Mark Mangino led the team to 50 victories in his eight years as head coach. The Jayhawks have yet to replicate their success from before Mangino's departure until after 2021. In that period, the team as a whole went 22-111. During that entire period, they had more than three wins.
Since their 2009 defeat to then-ranked 24th-ranked Oklahoma, the Jayhawks have been winless against AP top-25 opponents 44 times in a row. This lasted until the 2022 season when a 37-16 victory over 18th-ranked Oklahoma State sealed the deal. The 2008 season was the first time Kansas qualified for a bowl game.
