Kansas City Monarchs Information
The Kansas City Monarchs were the team that played in the Negro Leagues the longest. From 1920 to 1930, they were founding members of the Negro National League. They were based in Kansas City, Missouri, and were owned by J. L. Wilkinson. Wilkinson was the first white owner of the team when it was first formed. The Monarchs were the first professional baseball team to use a movable lighting system run from game to game in trucks in 1930. This allowed the team to play games at night.
Before the league became integrated, the Monarchs won ten titles and won the first Negro World Series in 1924. There was only one season when the Monarchs didn't have a winning record, and they sent more players to the big leagues than any other Negro league team. It was broken up in 1965.
Several times during the regular season, the Kansas City Royals have shown respect for the Monarchs by wearing imitation jerseys. The team's name was brought back to life by the Kansas City T-Bones, a minor league team in Kansas City, Kansas, in February 2021. The name was chosen after talks with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
