Kansas City Current Information
The Kansas City Current plays professional women's soccer based in Kansas City. Established in 2021 as an NWSL expansion franchise, it plays in the National Women's Soccer League. The 2023 Current was not very good during the regular season, placing eleventh out of twelve teams. However, they did make it to the semifinals of the NWSL Challenge Cup that year, where the eventual champions, the North Carolina Courage, defeated them.
Owners announced in January 2021 that the team would play its first season under the temporary name Kansas City NWSL with a temporary crest and colors due to the short turnaround between the team's founding and the 2021 NWSL season. After a full brand development process, a permanent team name, crest, and colors will be in place for the 2022 NWSL season.
The Portland Thorns and the Current played their inaugural encounter at CPKC Stadium on March 16, 2024. A sell-out crowd witnessed Kansas City's 5-4 victory. During the contest, rookie Alex Pfeiffer scored sixteen goals, which tied the record for most goals scored in a single match in NWSL history.
