The James Madison Dukes men's basketball team is the college men's team for Harrisonburg, Virginia's James Madison University. After being a part of the Colonial Athletic Association, since its inception in 1979, the school—a Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association member—joined the Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2022.

Although James Madison University's men's basketball program started in 1945, it was when the university became completely coeducational in the late 1960s, that it reached its full potential. As a varsity intercollegiate program, it debuted in the 1969–1970 season. 

As the eleventh men's basketball coach for the James Madison University program, Louis Rowe is a 2016 hiring and a previous assistant coach for the men's basketball team at JMU. The Dukes fired Rowe after he had guided the team for four years following the 2020 season. Rowe oversaw the Dukes as they amassed a 43-85 record.

Mark Byington was appointed head coach of the James Madison Dukes men's basketball team in March 2020. Byington was Georgia Southern's head coach before he came to JMU. During Mark Byington's rookie year at James Madison University, the Dukes won a share of the regular season championship, their first such feat since 2015.

The Atlantic Union Bank Center, James Madison's new on-campus arena, was inaugurated during his first season as head coach.  Under Byington's leadership, the Dukes won their first game against Virginia on December 7, 2021, in front of a record-setting home crowd.
