James Madison Dukes Football Information
The James Madison University's American football team is known as the Dukes. As of the 2022 season, the Dukes will play in the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) as an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision member. The Dukes, the school's football team, have played at Bridgeforth Stadium since the stadium's opening in 1972. Curt Cignetti is the current leader of the Dukes' coaching staff.
In 2021, the Dukes made their 18th appearance in the Division I-AA/FCS Playoffs. Overall, they had a record of 24-16. In 2004 and 2016, they won the Division I-AA/FCS National Championship; in 2017 and 2019, they finished as National Runners-Up. The James Madison Dukes football team accepted an invitation to play in the FBS Subdivision and join the Sun Belt Conference before the 2023 season, it was announced on November 6, 2021.
The Dukes of James Madison University are the second team in NCAA history (after the Knights of Central Florida) to compete in all four divisions of college football. The Dukes were placed #25 in the AP Top 25 on October 9, 2022, making them the first first-year FBS team ever to be ranked.
