The Jackson State Tigers compete in collegiate football as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The program's rise to prominence began in 1958 when it joined the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The 1980s were the most prosperous decade for the team. Between 1980 and 1990, the Tigers won eight conference titles under head coach W. C. Gorden, including a streak of four (from 1985 to 1988).
There are 93 professional football players from the Tigers, four of whom are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The names are Lem Barney, Walter Payton, Robert Brazile, and Jackie Slater.
