The IndyCar Monterey Grand Prix is an American IndyCar Series race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. The event started in 1983 and continued through 2004 before going on a fifteen-year hiatus. The event returned in 2019 as part of the IndyCar Series that replaced Sonoma. The event takes place each year at the end of the season. The Grand Prix has also served as the CART season finale. The first event was held as a USAC Road Racing Championship race.
The IndyCar Monterey Grand Prix has been through several name changes since its inception, including Cribari Wines 300k (1983), Quinn’s Cooler 300k (1984), Stroh’s 300k (1985), Champion Spark Plug 300 (1986-1990), Toyota Monterey Grand Prix (1991), Kodalux Processing 300 (1992), Makita 300 (1993), Bank of America 300 (1994-1996), Texaco-Havoline 300 (1997-1998), Shell 300 (1999-2000), Honda Grand Prix of Monterey (2001), and Bridgestone Grand Prix of Monterey (2002-2004).
Bobby Rahal is the only driver who has won the Monterey Grand Prix 4 times, and Penske Racing is the only team that has won the title 6 times. Gonzalo Rodriguez was fatally injured during a practice crash in 1999. The race consists of a total of 95 laps.
