Indy 500 Qualifying Information
Held annually on Memorial Day weekend in the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, the Indianapolis 500 is among the most renowned races in the US and is part of the IndyCar Series. It is among the most prestigious in motorsports.
The first race started in 1911, and since then, racers have had to qualify. Since 1920, drivers have qualified by driving their cars solo around the course for either four laps or ten miles. The starting grid, or the positions of competitors at the beginning of the race according to this run, has been in use since 1939. Only time and speed are considered for official scoring at the finish line.
Two days of qualifying and the time trials will take place the weekend before the event. Finally, the top nine qualifiers will participate in a unique "shootout" session to establish who will start on the pole. The final day of qualifying is known as "Bump Day."
