Hula Bowl Information
Every year in January, college football's best and brightest gather for the Hula Bowl. From its commencement until 2021, it was played in Hawaii. In 2022, the event's location moved to Orlando, Florida.
Originally played in 1947 between mainland college students and local Hawaiians, the game has been played entirely by college students since 1960. After a break after the 2008 edition, the bowl will return in 2020.
For a long time, the Hula Bowl set itself apart from the Senior Bowl by using collegiate regulations rather than professional ones and maintaining an amateur status throughout the competition (the Senior Bowl paid players through its 1988 edition). This was crucial for people who wanted to keep their amateur status and play other university sports (like college baseball). Once the longest-running sporting event in Hawaii, it was a popular place for aspiring NFL players to test the waters before making the jump to the big leagues.
Beginning with the January 1976 edition, the game was transferred from Honolulu Stadium to Aloha Stadium in Halawa. Except for eight games played at War Memorial Stadium on Maui, the game remained at Aloha Stadium through the 2021 edition. Due to Aloha Stadium's closure for repairs and upgrades in January 2022, the University of Central Florida (UCF) has committed to hosting the game.
