In NCAA Division I FBS college football, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors play for the University of Hawai?i at Manoa. Before joining the Mountain West Conference in July 2012, the team competed in the Western Athletic Conference.
Before the big decision in 2013 (to standardize all of the school's sporting team names went into force), the football team was known as the Warriors from 2000 until July 1, 2013.
Hawaii's Warriors were the third team from a league that didn't automatically qualify to play in a BCS bowl game. On January 1, 2008, in New Orleans, they met Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and lost by a score of 41-10.
Graham becomes the first UH head coach to win his first game since Bob Wagner in 1987, as the Rainbow Warriors beat Fresno State, 34-19, in the 2020 season opener. The team recorded over 300 yards of rushing and forced four turnovers. An additional highlight of the year was the shocking loss to unbeaten Nevada.
Hawaii hired Timmy Chang, a former quarterback, to replace Graham as head coach once Graham resigned in January 2022. Chang has a four-year contract. As a result of the repercussions of Graham's term as coach, 19 players from the 2021 team transferred to other groups, depleting the 2022 squad of its depth. These problems contributed to the team's 3-10 overall record and 2-6 conference mark in 2023.
