Public roads host the annual Gumball 3000, a 3,000-mile (4,800-kilometer) worldwide celebrity automobile rally. The film The Gumball Rally from 1976 is the inspiration for the title. It was founded in 1999 by Maximillion Cooper, who had the foresight to merge the worlds of automobiles, music, and fashion for enjoyment.
Since its inception, the road rally has welcomed the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Deadmau5, David Hasselhoff, Xzibit, Usher, and Tinie Tempah behind the wheel. Each year's rally has a different starting and ending location; in some cases, participants must fly to get there. The Gumball 3000 typically begins and ends in major cities, with London being a frequent stop due to its British creator.
In 2007, two members of the public were killed in the Republic of North Macedonia after a car driven by an entrant who was going too fast for conditions hit their vehicle. Several vehicles belonging to participants were seized in the Netherlands. Some drivers have had their licenses taken away for speeding at previous rallies.
